Living in a Creative Living Universe

“I like to experience the universe as one harmonious whole. Every cell has life. Matter, too, has life; it is energy solidified. The tree outside is life… The whole of nature is life...”      ~Albert Einstein

Look around and you may notice that everything in our Universe is involved in some form of creative activity- moving, evolving and changing all the time. It’s a Cosmic Dance that’s been going on since the Big Bang, when clouds of interstellar gas first gave birth to galaxies of stars.

Within the galaxies super novas exploded– seeding local regions with the basic elements that formed solar systems. Our own planet began as a molten rock circling our star, slowly cooling and hardening, allowing water to gather into oceans and rivers.

Life soon arose in the oceans. Small cells became amoebas, then plants, fish, insects, trees, animals. Conscious living creatures walking and swimming, mating and fighting, aware and alive…

That is how we got here, that is who we are. Children of the Universe, creative living beings! Even today, every life form travels a similar path, beginning as sperm and egg — cells multiplying and self-organizing, forming your heart, legs, lungs, eyes, ears, muscles and bones.

Who created your body, grew every inch of it, self-constructed your physical form, from scratch? Think about it… *YOU* did. And you’ve kept that up for decades now, taking in new materials from the world every single day, transforming and self-oranizing water, protein, calcium, oxygen, and other materials to maintain the structure of your body.

Every living being is a self-constructing self-organizing system, kept alive by photons that have traveled to our planet from the sun, then captured by leaves in plants, transported to us by fruits, vegetables and the seeds of our home world. Each and every one of us, an expression of the interdependent web of Life on earth, unique notes in the endless symphony that’s being sung by our Universe.

Creative self-organizing systems embedded within larger creative systems– atoms forming molecules forming cells forming body systems, forming human systems, family systems, social systems, communities embeded in ecosystems, forming planetary systems, solar systems, spinning galactic systems. All constantly transforming and intimately connected, falling apart and reforming, evolving and creating new forms.

It’s happening everywhere, within and all around you. Children playing together, insects buzzing in fields of flowers, your favorite bands jamming, brains learning, lovers loving. Everything and everyone constantly creating new things out of the materials that surround them, and sometimes out of thin air…

Cooking dinner, writing a letter. Our minds and hearts teaming up together, creating families and cultures, constructing sentences, giving birth to new ideas, art, science and poetry..

Until the day you die when it all ends– for *you* as this temporary localized unique expression of Universal Creativity– when all your atoms start to drop back, returning to the very Earth that has brought each of us into being.

Until that day we are here, we have a chance to participate in the dance, to add a verse or two to the cosmic chorus. All of us together- creative beings participating in a creative universe. The living eyes and souls of our Universe.

This is who we are.
